Favorite son of his hometown, Oviedo, he is a Doctor of Philosophy and Letters from the University of Oviedo and studies Musicology at the University of London.

As Stage Director he made his debut in Oviedo in 1980 with Verdi’s “La Traviata”. Ten years later, in 1990, he was appointed Director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela, a position he held until the end of 1999. In this theater he made his debut as Stage Director in 1982 with Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale”, which has been followed by more than twenty productions opera and zarzuela. He has been Artistic Director of the Royal Theater of Madrid from 2001 to 2005 and of the Arriaga Theater of Bilbao from 2008 to the end of 2015.

In 2006 he received the Teatro Campoamor Lyrical Award for best stage direction for his production of “El Barbero de Sevilla” held in 2005 at the Teatro Real, in 2010 the Award for Best Spanish Artist from the prestigious lyrical magazine “Ópera Actual”. the Argentine Music Critic Award for the best show of the year 2012 for “I Due Figaro” at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.

In 2020 the Government of Spain awarded him the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts and received the honorary prize for his career from Opera XXI.
