BIOGRAPHY
“Hijo predilecto”of his hometown, Oviedo, he holds a PhD in Philosophy and Literature from the University of Oviedo and studied musicology at the University of London.
He made his debut as a Stage Director in Oviedo in 1980 with Verdi’s “La Traviata”. Ten years later, in December 1990, he was appointed Director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela, a position he held until December 1999. He made his debut as Stage Director at this theatre in 1982 with Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale”, which was followed by more than twenty Opera and Zarzuela productions.
He was Artistic Director of the Teatro Real in Madrid from June 2001 to August 2005 and of the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao from January 2008 to December 2015.

In June 2006 he received the Lírico Teatro Campoamor Award for best stage direction for his production of “The Barber of Seville” staged in January 2005 at the Teatro Real; in May 2010 he received the award for best Spanish artist from the prestigious lyrical magazine “Ópera Actual”, the Argentine music critics’ award for the best show of 2012 for the staging of “I Due Figaro” at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and in December 2020 the Government of Spain awarded him the Gold Medal of Fine Arts.
His next engagements will take him to the Carlo Felice in Genoa, San Francisco Opera, Colón in Buenos Aires, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Municipal in Santiago de Chile, Hong Kong Opera, Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao, Teatro de la Zarzuela and Real in Madrid and Campoamor in Oviedo.
